At the Blue Reef Aquarium in Cornwall, England, there was a mystery involving the displays of coral. Matt Slater is the curator of the aquarium and he was __1__. Many of the corals that he had grown himself started disappearing, and he was unable to find out the answer.
Slater tested the water, thinking it could be a disease or some other factor. The test results found the chemistry of water to be fine, though, so that couldn’t be the problem. Then he began to think it could be a starfish, but a search of the tank __2__ none of these animals. Over time, though, more and more corals kept disappearing.
To find the __3__, Slater set up a trap. He put a plastic tube in the tank with pieces of bait in it. The tube had lots of holes in it to let out the smell of the bait, and the pieces of bait were filled with hooks. If the trap worked, they would catch the creature that was killing the coral.
After leaving the trap overnight, they discovered something unusual the next day. The trap was empty, but the bait was gone. The creature was able __4__ the bait without getting hooked. Night after night they tried the trap, but it kept coming up empty.
Slater decided he had to dismantle the tank and see what he could find. After removing the coral, he got down to the rocks that were on the bottom of the tank. Lifting up one large rock, he suddenly discovered a rope-like creature pouring out of it. It was a one and a half meter long sea worm that is known to eat coral. The mystery __5__, the worm was moved to its own tank and given the name Barry by the aquarium staff.
